As a personal injury lawyer, I had been representing others who endured the unthinkable loss or injury of a loved one for more than 25 years. Yet all that experience did not fully prepare me for my own immersion in tragedy. The unthinkable befell my family on the day my mother was struck and killed by a concrete mixer truck on April 28, 2020. I was stunned by the speed at which we were compelled to make important decisions, many with lasting consequences. No one should be put in a position of making decisions this important in the dark. I wrote this book as a way of honoring my mother-we called her Big Sissy-by providing practical, straightforward guidance to others who suddenly find their lives turned upside down.
